4 Ways to Prevent Damage to Your Furniture and House When Moving

If you’re one of the many people that will be moving this summer, here are the best tips for how to prepare.

Moving season is hot as ever, and will continue until September. Moving can be a stressful situation as you are working hard while also being cautious and attentive to avoid damage to your house and belongings. Seems like the best option would be researching moving companies or professional movers to help you move to a new place or store your items away. But, sometimes you might not have the time or money to invest in that. Instead, check out our moving equipment that is great for protecting your furniture and house.

Moving Dollies & Hand Trucks

Our hand trucks and moving dollies are a great tool to use when you need to move furniture or heavy items easily. If you are struggling to lift a heavier item like a refrigerator, stove, or chair, then put that heavy item on one of our dollies or hand trucks and give it a roll!

We carry quality 2-wheel hand trucks with a load capacity of 550 pounds, which perform well on stairs, bumps, ramps, etc. Our furniture moving dollies can perform any heavy-duty job, holding up to 1,500 pounds.

To learn more about the different hand truck and dolly options, see our Types of Dollies for Moving post.

Moving Straps

Our moving straps are great to use when you need to carry furniture or heavy, bulky items without risking strain on your back or neck. Not only is moving furniture injury-prone, but it can be time-consuming and challenging to move your heavy/bulky items. To avoid this, we recommend using furniture lifting straps to get the job done. We carry forearm forklift moving straps to carry from your forearms, and shoulder dolly moving straps to carry from your shoulders.

A moving strap is the single most important item you can have when moving large, heavy, and bulky items like furniture, mattresses, or appliances. Big items like these are not only difficult to get a good grip on, lift, and walk with, but the bending and twisting puts an enormous strain on back muscles.

Learn more about why moving straps are the best insurance for your move.

Furniture Covers

The worst part of moving heavy items out of storage is the damage that could potentially happen. Something could be dented, scratched, marked, or broken, and this will only add stress to your move. To make your moving process less stressful, consider our furniture covers for storage and moving.

Our furniture protectors work in many situations. You can use furniture covers for storage and for moving out or into a new place. You can choose to use our quilted furniture covers or plastic furniture covers. Both covers are easy to slip on or off, and you do not have to worry about abrasions.

Learn more great ways to protect furniture and appliances when moving.

Moving Blankets

Besides using furniture covers to cover your furniture or other items, we also carry moving blankets. These blankets, also called moving pads or furniture moving pads, are another tool to use to prevent damage and abrasion to your valuables. These blankets provide a thick covering that you can wrap just about any item with, and they are very durable and easily washable. What is also unique about the pads is that they are different in terms of fabric, weight, and binding material. Some blankets come in different weights and fabrics (non-woven polyester, woven polyester and cotton/poly blends), and the binding material has different fabric as well (woven, non-woven, and synthetic).

Our furniture moving blankets can be used for short-term or long-term storage, but keep in mind your end use and reuse. If you are interested in our moving blankets, we carry quantities of single-pack, 4-pack, 6-pack, or 24-pack.

If you find you have trouble deciding on a type of moving blanket see our post on how to choose the perfect moving blanket for your needs.

Moving Blankets 101

Moving Blanket Basics

Most of our moving blankets and moving pads are the standard 72″ x 80″ size. All of our moving blankets are stitched in a chevron pattern and have recycled cotton fiber filling. We refer to the weight of a blanket on a “per-dozen” basis, and the very heaviest blanket we sell is our Supreme Mover at 95-pounds/dozen.

Woven vs. Non-Woven Moving Blankets

This refers to the material of the body and the binding of the blanket. Woven moving blankets are more durable because they are threaded while non-woven blankets are pressed and heated.

“Good” Moving Blankets

These economical moving blankets are great for limited use and range in weight from 43-pounds/dozen to 65-pounds/dozen. They have a non-woven body and non-woven binding.

“Better” Moving Blankets

These mid-range moving blankets can withstand repeated use as they have a woven body with non-woven binding. The weight of blankets in our “Better” category range from 65-pounds/dozen to 85-pounds/dozen.

“Best” Moving Blankets

These are our most durable and high-quality moving blankets. They range from 75-pounds/dozen to 95-pounds/dozen and feature a woven body with woven binding. These moving blankets can be machine washed without damaging the integrity of the blanket.

Lightweight Moving Pads & Skins

We also have moving pads that are just 26-pounds/dozen. These are great for single use moves and light-duty shipping. Lacy has more information on these economical moving pads in the video below.

Types of Dollies for Moving

Investing in a quality dolly gives you years of relief from moving stress and struggle. So let’s get rolling with the types of dollies we offer, and the differences between them.

Carpeted Dolly vs. Rubber Cap Dolly vs. H-Dolly vs. Snap-Loc Dolly

Rising temperatures tell us that moving season is right around the corner and backs everywhere are already starting to hurt. Moving heavy furniture and bulky appliances is certainly no easy task, so why not make it as easy as possible on yourself by using a heavy-duty moving dolly to lessen the load?

Even if you aren’t a professional mover or planning a move anytime soon, moving dollies are a handy and back-saving tool to have around for all types of jobs. Getting a new loveseat, pool table, or washing machine? A dolly makes removing the old and bringing in the new a whole lot easier. Or maybe you’re just rearranging furniture or storage boxes to get some spring cleaning done.

using moving dollies

Investing in a quality dolly gives you years of relief from moving stress and struggle. So let’s get rolling with the types of dollies we offer, and the differences between them.

Overview of Differences Between Dollies

Here’s a quick look at the key physical differences between the dollies we sell.

differences between types of moving dollies

H-Dolly Mover Grade

moving dolly high quality

With its heavy-duty design, thick rubber tread deck, and non-marking wheels, this H-Dolly is our most popular dolly. It holds up to 1,000 pounds and weighs just under 20 pounds. Great for all types of appliances and bulky items.

Carpeted Dolly

This type of dolly is our most economical choice. It has two raised carpeted ends that provide scuff and scratch protection for walls and doorways. This standard 20-pound carpeted dolly also has a handy cut-out that makes it easy to carry.

Rubber Cap Dolly

Moving heavy furniture is a breeze with this swiveling rubber end cap dolly that has a 1,000 pound load capacity and thick rubber ends. The non-marking double ball bearing wheels are safe to use on carpet, hardwood, vinyl, or tile.

Snap-Loc Heavy-Duty Moving Dolly

heavy duty moving dolly lasts longer snap loc features

Say hello to the Cadillac of moving dollies. Not only is this rugged dolly reinforced with a heavy-duty steel frame and high-density polyethylene molded body, but it’s also resistant to oil, grease, and other chemicals.

Perhaps the best feature of the Snap-Loc moving dolly is its ability to become joined to another Snap-Loc dolly using a connector strap. This gives you a larger working surface area for bigger objects. You can also connect E-Track straps to the dolly for extra hold on your cargo during transport.

Unpacking Moving Industry Trends: Why, When, and Where Americans are Moving

According to U.S. Census data, 11.2 percent of Americans move each year on average. That’s over 35 million Americans who will make the big decision to pack up and move on this year.

The big questions are: what makes Americans want to move, when are they doing it, and where are they going? Continue reading to understand moving industry trends that will better prepare you to make tough moving decisions.

Why Americans Move

According to U.S. Census data, most Americans move specifically to change their current housing situation. This includes a desire for new or better housing, housing that is their own, or cheaper housing.

Meanwhile, other Americans are moving due to a new job or for personal family reasons.

Other less common reasons include a change in marital status, leaving for college, seeking a neighborhood with less crime, retirement, or just wanting a change of climate.

When Americans Move

Among those using a professional moving service or renting a moving truck (those that are trackable), Fridays are the most popular day to move. According to My Moving Reviews Annual Data Report, 20 percent of moves in 2017 were done on a Friday.  Moving on this day allows more time to unpack and be ready for work on Monday.

The least popular days to move? Sundays and Tuesdays. If you can move on either these days, you will most likely get better prices on moving services.

The summer is by far the busiest time of year for moving. The overall busiest moving month? June, with about 13 percent of total moves. Interestingly, the overall busiest moving day of 2017 was June 30. The second? Just one day later on July 1.

Moving Advice

If you’re thinking about moving, whether it’s across town or across the country, make sure you have plenty of moving supplies and set time aside to plan and prepare. Start by getting tips on how to remove the stress of moving.

Moving Checklist: Remove the Stress of Moving in 15 Steps

stress free moving

Moving tends to be a combination of excitement and mind-rattling nerves. It’s a new adventure and a turn of the page. But, it’s also often a startling plunge into new and unfamiliar territory.  Above all else, it’s a lot of work.

Believe it or not, the stress of moving is right up there with divorce, job loss, and death of a loved one.

But, fear no more. Whether it’s your first move ever, or your fifth move this year, use this checklist to remove the guesswork and stress of moving.

Months Before Moving: No Need to Sound the Alarm

  • Decide whether you’re going to hire a moving company, rent a moving van, or move yourself using your own equipment. Moving companies and moving vans can be booked solid for several months, especially during the moving season (May through August). The earlier you book, the better rates you’ll get. Just make sure the moving company is licensed with the FMCSA.

  • Submit a change of address form at usps.com. Also, don’t forget to notify banks, credit cards, insurers, and healthcare providers. Otherwise, the next person to move into your home could be getting your sensitive information.

  • Make any necessary repairs and touchups to your old home or apartment.

  • Start purging items that aren’t worth moving. Whether you sell them or toss them, some items just aren’t worth the cost or work of moving.

  • Make sure you have plenty of moving supplies. Using specialized supplies will increase efficiency and help prevent damage when moving.

  • Begin packing as early as possible, starting with your least-used items. Label boxes by room and contents. Then, for quick reference, create a comprehensive inventory of which items went in what boxes. Use colored stickers for added organization and less writing.

  • Give yourself some breathing room by scheduling time off work.

  • If you’re moving without assistance from professionals, enlist the help of family and friends. Don’t put all the work on yourself.

Weeks Before Moving: Don’t Resist, Keep Pushing

  • Schedule your current utilities to be shut-off or transferred to your new address.

  • Continue packing as much as possible.

  • If you have access to your new space, make sure it’s clean. There will never be an easier time to clean or paint a wall than when the space is empty.

  • Remind your enlisted moving helpers of the day and time you need them. If you’re renting a truck or hiring workers, call the company to confirm dates and times.

The Day Before Moving Day: Fight the Fatigue

  • Pack your essentials, like bedding, toilet paper, snacks, soap, plates, cups, utensils, and cleaning supplies in one box. Then, set it aside to be loaded last so that it will be the first box brought into your new home.

  • Finish packing all other belongings so you can start moving bright and early the next day.

  • Get plenty of sleep.

Moving Day: Embrace the Change

Once everything is packed and organized, it’s just a matter of moving it. If you’re doing it yourself, look at it as a chance to exercise. Stay positive. To pass the time, think of all the new people and places you will soon get to experience.

May is National Moving Month, meaning moving season is getting ready to ramp up. We’ve got some ideas on how to help make your move easier and less painful – literally. The best insurance is the one that gets the job done and lasts. This is what moving straps can do for you during your next move. Find out how to avoid damage to your body and your belongings.

Why risk an injured back during your move? After all, there are a full array of moving straps available that use the law of physics to make moving large, bulky items easier. Don’t let pride, ego, or the lack of knowledge confine you to a hospital room or your bed. After all, a move is most often a temporary and infrequent event. Don’t risk a back injury that will possibly tug away at you for the rest of your life.

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is true in the area of moving as well. Prevention of injury through the use of moving straps is just plain smart. Also, prevention of damage to your belongings is also smart. Consider the ways the moving straps provide insurance for your moving activity.

Moving Straps Use Your Whole Body

First, the obvious is that moving straps decrease the risk of injury to your back. The straps are designed to use alternate body muscles to do the lifting. For heavy items, shoulder straps attach to your body in a way that encourages the use of your leg muscles rather than your lower back. The muscles in your leg are less prone to getting tweaked and injured when you put additional weight on them.

There are also moving straps that use the muscles in your arms to do the lifting. This type of strap is appropriate for those larger, bulkier items that you may have trouble getting a grip on. Often it is by being thrown off balance that a back injury occurs. By employing a forklift type strap your hands are kept free to guide an unruly object to its destination.

Lacy, USCC Sales Specialist

“Forearm forklift is a very popular strap for professional movers or consumers wanting a versatile way to assist in moving items like a washer, dryer, mattress, or heavy wood furniture like a hutch,” recommends Lacy, a USCC Sales Specialist. “It is adjustable and takes the pressure off your back. Remember though, you can only lift what you are physically capable of carrying,” she adds.

Safer For Your Belongings

The second type of insurance is in the form of protecting the furniture or objects themselves. Rather than risk having to purchase or repair an LCD television set that slipped out of your grip and smashed to the floor, why not use the proper moving straps for the job.

Mattresses Made Easier

One final way to make your move a whole lot easier is to use a mattress carrier. Moving mattresses, especially king- or queen-sized mattresses, can be a handful. They are heavy and extremely pliable. Our canvas mattress carrier is designed with 9” handles on each side to distribute the lifting and lessen the bodily strain.

Moving straps are likely the most inexpensive insurance you can purchase to avoid injury or damage. However, unlike other types of insurance where a premium is paid and then lost, the straps become a piece of equipment that you can keep and use again. Check out our full line of moving supplies.

Moving Supplies Checklist: is your truck or trailer ready?

Stocking a moving truck with the right moving supplies can be a tough task – and we want to help make that process as simple as possible. At US Cargo Control, our experts have put together an equipment recommendation guide to help you furnish your truck or trailer with the moving supplies you need.

Check out our handy guide pictured. It breaks down the types and number of recommended equipment depending on the size of the truck or trailer.

Let’s start with moving pads, also known as moving blankets. Pads are essential moving items you’ll definitely use. Our pads offer premium protection to keep your customer’s possessions safe during the move. US Cargo Control recommends our supreme moving pads, they are made from a heavy-duty cotton and polyester fabric blend. These blankets are durable and can be used over-and-over again. They are also machine-washable.

Moving skins are a must. They are good pads to have on hand for light-duty protection and packing. Skins are made of non-quilted, recycle cotton fabric filler. They are also an extremely economic choice; 24-skins come per pack

Stretch wrap is another great protector – used to bundle and secure loads, it resists puncturing and tearing even on the sharpest corners. Mattress bags are another smart buy, used to combat dust, spills, moisture and stains.

Moving isn’t just about packing – professional movers also need the right tools to help them lift heavy furniture and appliances out of the house and into the truck.

We recommend several different types of dollies including a four-wheel dolly, a box dolly and an appliance truck dolly. Our four-wheel dolly is made of hard-wood and features carpeting, foam or rubber to protect the item it’s hauling. Both box and appliance styles are two-wheeled, designed to be loaded, tipped and rolled. The appliance-truck style will help with super heavy refrigerators and washing machines.

Moving straps and bands are also good for moving hefty or bulky items. The straps can help prevent injury by working larger muscle groups like shoulders, thighs and forearms, taking strain off the neck and back. Bands will keep drawers closed and secure moving pads to protect furniture during the move. A rubber band holder is a smart buy to keep the bands organized and off the floor of the truck.

Movers are often asked to haul the heaviest of items, including a piano or car. A piano board will help crews get the expensive instrument out the door and to its next location safely. The board features three slots on each side for quick and easy attachment of e-track straps. The board is also padded to protect the piano. You’ll need a piano moving strap to secure it to the board. If you’re responsible for moving a vehicle, auto tie downs are necessary. Make sure you know the specs for the type and style you select.

A professional mover is expected to leave the house the way they found it.

Stock upon  door jamb protectors, door covers and floor runners. These products are in inexpensive way to prevent damage. Full covers protect the front and back of the door, while jamb protectors can be adjusted to fit almost any door. Floor runners keep floors clean, damage-free and provide a non-slide surface for crews. The runner also wipes clean and can be rolled-up and stored until the next job.

Items need to be safe and secure during transit.

US Cargo Control offers E-track straps and shoring beams to tie-down your customer’s belongings. Shoring beams, also known as decking beams, are used to lock cargo in place and prevent items from sliding around inside the trailer. The beams are lightweight and can be adjusted to fit many trailers. Straps are available in variety of styles and lengths. Bulk orders come at a discount and can be customized with color and stenciling. Customization is a great way to show-off your brand and can help prevent loss or theft. Rubber Tarp Straps should also be in the truck for light-duty tie downs. They come in a variety of lengths and bundles. Finally, you should padlock the truck to keep thieves away from your customer’s possessions.

Safety is key in maintaining a reliable, reputable moving organization.

Keep wheel-chocks on the truck and use them to secure the wheels when movers start loading. Break-downs and other emergencies do happen, so keep a set of emergency or safety triangles on hand to warn other vehicles you’re stopped on the roadway. Have a first-aid kit ready in the event of injury and a fire extinguisher around should you ever encounter flames.

Some final supplies to consider: keep a toolbox in the truck or trailer in case you need it on-the-go. US Cargo Control offers a 116-piece all inclusive tool kit and carrying case.  A double sided ladder is a good investment for tall jobs and a ramp or walking board is useful for loading boxes and furniture into the trailer. Those items can be purchased at almost any hardware store.

We hope this list helps as you stock up for the busy moving season ahead. Our moving supplies team is happy to help with any questions.

The Snap-Loc carts also feature E-track singles on the sides of the cart, which accept tie down straps with spring E-fittings to make it easy to secure a load to the cart, or to secure the cart to an E-track rail installed in a trailer. A Connector Strap can also be used to connect two carts together to increase the working surface area.

Heavy duty pallet bands were also recently added to our  Moving Straps & Mover Bands category, offering customers three larger options in addition to our popular rubber mover bands.

More new products are also planned for the first quarter of 2015, including an appliance truck with a new kickback feature, black floor runners, and reflective seatbelt covers.

Custom stenciling options for our popular line of tie down straps is also a new feature that will be available in 2105. Straps stenciled with a company’s name are an excellent way to create a professional image, as well as offer a method of loss prevention, so we’re extremely excited to be able to offer this option to customers.
