How to Choose a Moving Blanket

With several varieties, fabrics and weights of moving blankets, choosing the right one can be a more complex process than you might think.

We’ve created a short video to highlight the key qualities of each.  Below you’ll also find a link to each style so you can easily find them on the USCargoControl.com moving supplies page. All moving blankets are available in single packs, 4-packs and dozen bundles; moving pads (also known as moving skins) are available in 6-packs and 24-packs.

A final tip: moving blankets can also be extremely useful even after a move! Check out “Moving blankets: not just for moving anymore” for ideas on other uses for a moving blanket.

How to Use Mover Bands

Elastic mover bands are a must-have accessory for moving. These giant rubber bands are perfect for securing drawers and doors closed on furniture during a move, and unlike tape they won’t leave a sticky residue. They’re also ideal for placing over a moving blanket or moving pad to keep the extra layer of protection in place. If your furniture is going into storage, they’re gentle and safe enough to leave on for an extended period of time.

While packing tape goes into the garbage after you’re all unpacked, these stretchy bands can be re-used after the move: use them to secure cardboard boxes closed in storage; keep around pet food cans and bags outdoors to keep unwanted critters out; keep lids on outside garbage cans; secure coolers closed when camping; bundle hiking supplies together for easier carrying…  the uses are many!

Our mover bands come in four sizes: Big (27″), Large (30″), Extra Large (36″) and Oversized (44″). Keep in mind that measurements are when laid flat before stretching- they stretch to over twice their length when in use.

Which Moving Blanket Is Right For Me?

US Cargo Control offers a wide variety of moving blankets (also known as moving pads, furniture moving pads, and packing blankets) for consumers and moving professionals. In this video we show you the differences in weight, fabric and binding of our entire line of moving blankets.

There are three features that determine the quality of a moving blanket:

  • Weight of the blanket
  • The type of fabric used
  • The type of binding

The weight of a moving blanket determines its durability and amount of cushion protection it  provides. Blankets are measured by weight, not volume, and are sold in compressed bulk packaging for easier shipping. One dozen bundles of moving blankets are weighed as a unit, such as our Supreme moving blanket that weighs 95 pounds per dozen. On average, an individual Supreme moving blanket weighs approximately 8 pounds.

Moving blanket fabric is classified into three categories:

  • A durable, economical fabric choice for economy moving blankets and middle level moving blankets. The zig zag pattern helps prevent snags from becoming longer tears in the blanket.
  • Woven polyester woven means that strands of fabric are in a weave (criss cross pattern) for added strength and tear resistance.

The binding of moving blankets is also an important consideration. The binding encompasses the entire blanket and makes the blanket more durable during use, handling and washing. Binding should be uniform, tightly stitched and free of rips and tears. Note:  If you intend to machine wash your blanket, it must have a woven binding.

Our lowest price moving blanket is our Skin moving blanket which is the moving blanket filler without fabric or binding. These cheap moving blankets are perfect for one-time use to protect valuables from scratches.

Don’t forget to about our large rubber bands and our appliance lifting straps. Rubber bands for moving work great to hold moving blankets in place on furniture during transport. Our rubber bands come in four sizes:

Hand Truck Features and Benefits

Hand trucks with extended nose plate features are sometimes referred to as box dollies because of their ability to carry large corrugated moving boxes because of the added support of the nose plate extension.

The round handle for hand trucks has an ergonomic bend and is covered with a soft molded cover for a comfortable grip.

Stair climbers for hand trucks allow you to maneuver hand trucks up and down stairs and over curbs safely and easily.

US Cargo Control offers hand truck options with foam filled tires and pneumatic tires. Foam filled tires are also called “run flat tires” because the foam compound stays consistent in temperature extremes and even if punctured. Pneumatic (or air-filled) tires can provide some shock absorption qualities, but are also susceptible to punctures and pressure increase or decrease due to temperature changes. Pneumatic tires for hand trucks are similar to bike tires or car tires in this respect.

Box dollies with extended nose plates are convenient for moving corrugated boxes because the nose plate extension provides a larger surface for stacking moving boxes. The extension can be folded up if it isn’t needed or for tighter spaces where turning radius is important.

Moving Blankets- Not Just for Moving Anymore

Moving blankets are one of our specialties at US Cargo Control. With everything from lightweight “Skins” to our heavy-duty “Supreme” professional moving blankets, we know a lot about these moving day must-haves.

But we’re learning from our customers that moving blankets come in handy even after you’ve settled in your new home:

Moving heavy objects
USCC customer Tom in Iowa tells us he and a buddy had to move a heavy safe from one room in his house to another. They were able to put a Supreme moving blanket underneath, and slide it to its new spot. The blanket’s strength held up under the weight while the padding protected both the floor and safe from scratches.

Beach blanket, picnic blanket, outdoor sporting events
Our lightweight Econo Saver moving pad measures a generous 72″x80″… much larger than typical beach blankets or picnic blankets. And at just $10.99, it’s an economical choice too.  Keep one or two in the car and you’ll be ready for the next kids’ sporting events, too. Watching a pee wee soccer game is much more comfortable when you don’t have to deal with scratchy grass or hard bleachers! If you’re looking for something that’s machine-washable, move up to our Pro Mover, for only $17.29.

Camping
Lugging along a cot or inflatable mattress is not always convenient when camping with a tent, but a moving blanket like our Mega Mover is totally portable. According to USCC customer Amy, the best part is that it can do double duty: place it under a sleeping bag for an extra layer of cushion, or snuggle under one near the campfire when the temperatures dip.

Yoga mat
Fitness fanatic Jessica forgot her yoga mat at the gym but was able to improvise for a yoga session at home thanks to a Performance moving blanket she had on hand after the move to her new house.

Vehicle seat cover for pets
If your family dog goes along for the ride and leaves dirt and hair behind, try covering it in a Multi Mover blanket. The green and light blue color combination doesn’t highlight the mess like a black blanket can, and the durability stands up to even the biggest, busiest pooches.

Warm up an outdoor doghouse, barn, or shed
Just as our Multi Mover blankets work well for pets in the vehicle, pick up a dozen bundle if you have pets or small animals outside. Line the inside of a doghouse or barn pen to give your fury friends a layer of warmth underneath. A USCC customer said he uses them in the corner of a shed for his outdoor cats in the winter.

Hunting trips
Camo anything is a given on a hunting trip, so having over 36 square feet of camouflage that’s flexible and moveable can be valuable- use it in a duck blind window, to cover supplies on the ground, on a tree stand- the possibilities are endless. Like all of our moving blankets, they are available in dozen bundles, 4-packs or sold as singles so you can buy just what you need.

Making a soundproof music room
USCC customer Craig put our Supreme blankets to work in his basement music room. The thickness is excellent at absorbing sound, making for better sound quality and less echo when his band is rehearsing, as well as cutting down on the noise from traveling upstairs to the rest of the family.

5 Moving Day Must-Haves

May is National Moving Month, when thousands of Americans will be packing up their belongings and moving to a new home. Whether it’s due to a job change, a school change or just the desire for a change of scenery, moving is exciting but also a lot of work. If you choose to go the do-it-yourself route and pack and move everything yourself, consider investing in these must-haves to ensure the move goes smoothly:

4-wheel dolly

A moving dolly is a great way to move large, heavy items. With a capacity of 800 lbs., even our most basic carpeted moving dolly is no lightweight. The best part? Moving dollies can be extremely useful even after the move: when it’s time to move a heavy tool box in the garage, re-locate potted plants from the patio, etc.

Hand truck

A hand truck is worth the investment because it’s an easy way to move multiple boxes at once, cutting down on trips to and from the moving truck. Our selection of hand trucks offers a wide range of styles and prices for every budget. Like a 4-wheel moving dolly, a hand truck can be a great piece of equipment to have even after the move: keep it in the garage, shed or barn and use it to move large garbage cans, boxes of holiday decorations, etc.

Moving straps

Moving straps are a fantastic moving tool that many people don’t know about. These handy straps are a great way to move large, odd-shaped items or furniture or appliances that can be hard to grab hold of and maintain a good grip. We carry the three most popular styles: Team Strap, Forearm Forklift and the Shoulder Dolly moving strap. All are similar in design in that they take the strain off your back and neck when lifting, but all attach and work slightly different. After the move, they fold up for storage so they don’t take a lot of room.

Special purpose moving boxes

Boxes are obviously a must-have for moving, but we suggest picking up some special purpose boxes for two reasons:  they make packing easier, saving time searching for just the right size box; and they can safeguard your more expensive items from dings and scratches. Our favorites include boxes for TVsmoving boxes for glasses (which includes partitions)  and lamp moving boxes (which are also great for rugs, toys, garage tools, etc.).

Moving blankets

Moving blankets or pads are another essential you may think you don’t need, but the investment is definitely worth it. Throw them over furniture to protect the fabric, over appliances to prevent scratches and dings, around odd shaped items that won’t fit in a box, and more (be sure to pick up some  extra large rubber bands to keep them in place). Moving blankets are also helpful beyond moving day: keep one in the car to have for the kids’ outdoor sporting activities- they make the grass less itchy and the bleachers less hard!; line a kennel or dog house for a little cushioning for the family pet; throw one in with the camping gear for an extra layer on the tent floor or when sitting around the camp fire.

Moving day must-haves are sure to make the moving job easier and faster so you can begin enjoying your new home sooner.

Moving Dolly Strength Test

Heavy duty moving dollies by US Cargo Control are rated for 800 pound capacity. But we wondered what would happen if more than 3 times that weight was set on it. Would they hold up? Would the swivel wheels collapse or the wood frame snap? We set out to learn and document that process.

The Weight:  Transport Chain
US Cargo Control stocks a large quantity of Grade 70 chain, so we took a pallet of 3/8″ X 20′ chain – weighing in 2,548 lbs – and set it on our sturdy little appliance dolly with rubber caps.

As the video shows, the heavy duty appliance dolly held its own under the strain of 2.25 tons of chain. But how does it perform under normal use?

The Weight:  Moving Blankets
US Cargo Control is known for stocking a large variety of moving pads, so next we chose a pallet of our popular black and white moving blanket bundles. The pallet tipped the scales at 790 pounds – ten pounds under the load rating for the furniture dolly. With this weight, the dolly performs as described, rolling easily across the concrete.

Moving bands are the perfect accessory for your moving needs. Simply place the moving bands around your piece of furniture to keep drawers from rolling open and doors shut.

Sometimes drawers are hard to take out of your dressers and frustrating to put back in. With mover bands you can keep the drawers in place without worrying about them sliding out while moving the furniture.

Keeping your moving blankets over your furniture is not a problem with moving bands. Put the blanket over the furniture and then slip a couple of moving bands around the blanket. This will help hold the blanket in place, giving your furniture more protection.

The Supreme blanket is the thickest moving blanket on the market

The Supreme moving blanket is the highest quality furniture pad that we offer at US Cargo Control. This blanket features a polyester / cotton blend which means it’s a lot softer to the touch and it will protect even your most fragile items when moving.

Not only will the Supreme moving blanket prevent scratches when your furniture and belongings are being transported, but the blanket also prevents scuffing on walls or other obstacles.

Another important characteristic of our Supreme moving blanket is the woven binding. These woven fibers on the binding mean that the blanket is more tear resistant and abrasion resistant and is overall, a stronger blanket. It also means it will hold up well in a washing machine and you won’t have to worry about it falling apart.

Moving bulky and awkward furniture on hardwood floors is no longer a challenge with the Supreme moving blanket. Simply use the blanket to slide furniture across the floors without worrying about scratching the floor or the furniture.

This combination of durability and softness also makes it a great option for sound proofing or as pet bedding.

The Supreme moving blanket is ultra heavy weight, weighing in at about 95 pounds per dozen. The uniform zig-zag pattern means that the cotton filler is consistent throughout the entire blanket, making it the thickest moving blanket in the industry. When you need maximum protection for your furniture, there is no other choice.
